In this tutorial we explore the many ways you can be creative with flowers.
Tutorial: Drawing with the Flower Tool 🌸
This guide will introduce you to the Flower tool, a generative art tool that uses a fractal technique called an "L-System" to grow complex, plant-like structures from a simple set of rules. With just a single click, you can create a variety of unique floral designs.
How to Draw a Basic Flower
The Flower tool functions as a "stamp," creating an entire plant where you click.
-
Navigate to the Shape tab in the controls panel.
-
Select Flower from the Mode dropdown menu.
-
Click anywhere on the canvas. The flower will instantly grow, with its base at the point you clicked.
Customizing the Flower's Shape
You can dramatically alter the appearance of your flowers using the parameters in the Shape tab.
-
Flower Iteration: This is the most important setting for complexity. Each iteration adds a new layer of branches, making the flower fuller and more detailed. Be aware that high values (above 5) can take a moment to render.
-
Flower Angle: This controls the angle of each new branch as it splits from its stem. Smaller angles create tall, narrow plants, while larger angles create wide, bushy ones.
-
Flower Step: This determines the length of each small branch segment. Increasing this value will make the entire flower larger and more spread out.
-
Flower Stroke: This sets the thickness (in pixels) of the flower's stems and branches.
-
Non-tree scale MIN/MAX: These sliders, found further down the panel, add a slight random size variation to each flower you draw, helping to create more natural-looking fields of plants.
Adding Blossoms
You can add colorful blossoms to the tips of your flower's branches.
-
In the Flower Parameters section, check the Add Blossoms box.
-
A new set of controls will appear:
-
Blossom Size: Controls the radius of the circular blossoms.
-
Blossom Color: Use the color picker to set the color of the blossoms.
-
Coloring Your Flower
The flower's colors are set in two different places:
-
Stems and Branches: The color of the main plant structure is determined by the settings in the Color tab under Coloring for Non-Tree Objects. You can use a single, uniform color or have each new flower pick a random color from the global palette.
-
Blossoms: The blossom color is set independently using its own Blossom Color picker within the Flower Parameters on the Shape tab.
